I grew up on the island of Maui where I graduated from Seabury Hall as the 1997 valedictorian. At Harvard University, I majored in English and was selected as one of two students given the honor of writing a creative thesis, for which I was awarded the Thomas Temple Hoopes Prize. I graduated cum laude in 2001. In 2004, I graduated with an MFA in Poetry from Columbia University’s School of the Arts. In 2007, while pursuing my PhD in English at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, I was a recipient of the John Young Scholarship for the Arts. My areas of interest include Contemporary Polynesian Poetry, Contemporary American Poetry, and the Pedagogy of Creative Writing.
